Little Girl Vintage Dress Free Pattern
By AnnooCrochet Designs
I have always wanted to Try to make a Crochet Dress, but was a little shy to try. I am tremendously enjoying Creating Clothing for my Little Girl Abigail.
Creating a dress in a small size somewhat seems less intimidating doesn't it?
Anyway, here is the result...not too shabby if I may say so myself...;-)

ReplyDeletebeautiful kite! thanks for the pattern and explanation. he comes to my collection :-) Regards helga
ReplyDeleteI love this dress! I am going to make it for my 4 year old. On the top of the dress how much yarn did you use yardage wise? I am trying to see if I have enough around the house before starting it.
ReplyDeleteGreat!!! Lets see Virginia, I bought a 14 oz skien of the Original Sugar'n Cream yarn, and used about 4 oz maybe even a little less of yarn for the top...;-)
DeleteI hope this info helps you!!! Happy Crochet!!!
Thank you so much! I am getting lost on your row 2. You say to have 34 shells, I keep getting like 50. :( I love this dress, do you have any pointers? Please and thank you!
DeleteVirginia, are you sure you are making your 3dc only in the ch space from row 1, and skipping the dc's from row 1?
DeleteActually I was reading your pattern incorrectly, I have figured it out though, thank you!
Delete;-)))))
DeleteHi Virginia and Annoo, I am having the same problem and coming up with like 50 shells like you were Virginia...I was just wondering if you could tell me where you went wrong or how you solved the problem as maybe we did the same thing?? Thanks P.S Thank you so much for the pattern Annoo!! Regards Kelly :o)
DeleteI am having the same problem. I keep coming up with 50 shells...
DeleteHi every body
DeleteI have also the same problem getting 50 shells
I cant solve it
Pkease help since I love the dress very much
Beautiful dress! By chance do you have your gauge? I seem to always need to adjust my hook size and am wondering if I need to go up a hook or down a hook for this. Thanks for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteFor the Sugar'n Cream yarn, and the shell st, it is 17stitches, and 5 rows for a 4inches square swatch
DeleteFor the Dungarease yarn it is 21 stitches and 7 rows for a 4 inches square swatch!!! Happy crochet!!!
Thank you SO much! You are wonderful!
DeleteHi! Love this beautiful dress :) Wondering if I could trouble you to ask what your gauge is with the 3.75mm hook? Also, what are the measurements across the top of the shoulders (outside edges), the waist, and the bottom? Appreciate it so much!
ReplyDeleteFor the Sugar'n Cream yarn, and the shell st, it is 17stitches, and 5 rows for a 4inches square swatch

This is really beautiful work!! Thank you for sharing with us. I'd like to make one for my little girl.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work, the pictures are a real credit to you.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteit`s a really wonderful dress. And your tutorial is the best I`ve ever seen. Thank you for sharing
This is the best ever tutorial i have seen.. so in depth and thank u so much for your time.. Ur dress is just so so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI would like to make this for my 2 year old for her 4th of July outfit. What would you suggest as far as pattern tweaking to accommodate for her small size? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHi Amy, I would chain 74, and work the pattern accordingly by working 8 rows of the shell pattern for the body, diminishing about 3 shells on each side for the arm whole and making shoulder straps that would be 2 shells wide... 6 rows shoulder straps for the front and 2 rows for the back does this make sense ?
DeleteFor the Skirt part, I would pick 2 stitches of the new color into every other st from the body. ending with about 105 to 110 stitches for the skirt
Let me know if this helped..;-)
I'm glad someone else asked this question - I want to do the same thing, make it for my almost 2 year old! :)
DeleteIt looks absolutely gorgeous! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love the design! I have made baby dresses following patterns but I haven't tried designing one. I love you creations! I am Jei Crochet of Cutey Patuty Crochet. I hope you visit my page too ;)
ReplyDeleteHi! I absolutely love this pattern!!! I am stuck on round 2 though. I keep getting only 25 shells. I am not sure where I went wrong. Completely opposite of everyone else's problem, lol! Any help you could provide would be great! Thank you soooo much!
ReplyDeleteAnother question about the 2nd round. When you 2sc, does that mean in the same stich? Thank you!
DeleteNevermind! I was totally reading the pattern wrong!
DeleteHI,
ReplyDeleteI'm from South Africa and we don't have Sugar n cream yarn or Dungarease yarn here. Could you please give me more info on the yarns so that I can find a substitute for them. I really love this pattern and want to make it for my almost 2 year old to wear to her second birthday party.
Please and thank you
Louise
Ok My Dear, DungarEase is 60% Cotton and 40% Acrylic,
DeleteMedium yarn, gauge is
Sugar'N crean is a 4Ply, Medium Yarn,100% Cotton
For the Sugar'n Cream yarn, and the shell st, it is 17stitches, and 5 rows for a 4inches square swatch
For the Dungarease yarn it is 21 stitches and 7 rows for a 4 inches square swatch!!! Happy crochet!!!
I hope it helped!!!!
Gauge is 20 stitches for 26 Rows equals a 4 by 4 inch square
Hi Annoo I love your pattern but I am having problems understanding how yiu got 34 shells.
ReplyDeleteI have tried everything and I keep coming up with 51 shells just like my previos row where I have 51 chains.
Please help me understand hiw to get 34 shells also I would like to make for a 3yr old so if you can tell me how many chains to start with it would be great. Thnaks a lot . Sheila
Hi Sheila,
Deleteare you only making your shells in the ch from the previous row?
Lets try to make it work for a 3 year old, I would ch 84 which should give you a total of 28 shells...then follow the rest of the pattern, you will have less stitches at round 1 of the body of course and would have to adapt the body pattern a little...
Try it this way and do not hesitate to ask me more questions...
Happy Crochet
Hey Annoo, I made 84 chains, on row 1 I end up getting 42 groups of 2sc. On row 2 I chaind up 3 stitches and I go in every ch space with 3dc till the end and end up with 41 groups of shells. What am I doing wrong? I am going nuts!
DeleteI did it!!!!!!! Yay!!!!
DeleteI have been searching for the perfect dress pattern to feature on my blog, The Firefly Hook, that has a high cuteness factor, easy to read instructions, and proper pattern lingo. Congratulations! Your pattern and accompanying tutorial are incredible. And HUGE props on the easy shaping - no one will cry when they make your dress!
ReplyDeleteI'll let you know when it posts.
Warmly,
Abbey (for The Firefly Hook)
Abbey, I am so honored!!!Thank you so very much!
DeleteHi there... can you please email me... I have been working on making this little dress which I just adore. But for some reason im having a hard time understanding starting from row 4. I thought I understood your directions and I cant seem to read it from the pictures. I have no idea how to read a chart either lol. If you have time... please email me and let me know what the pattern is. To be honest... im having a hard time reading your whole pattern. But I do really love this dress. :)
ReplyDeletethank you.

Hi Dawnie,
DeleteWould absolutely help you, send me a email with specific questions at annoocrochet@gmail.com and lets make the blissful zen crochet happen!!!!
Well... thank you anyway... I eventually figured it out after leaving it for a day and coming back to it.
DeleteHowever I have changed the pattern a bit.
Dawnie.
i love this dress however, i have been racking my brain trying to figure out row 2. i chained the 102 stitches and did row 2. row 3 i am only getting 33 shells.
ReplyDeletePlease, do not sweat it, 33 shells are perfectly fine, it will not change your result, you might ave dropped a few stitches on the way...;-)))))
Deletethank you for the quick response!! i am so happy to hear this.. its still sort of bugging me just because i cant get that last shell but i am thrilled to hear that i can make it with the 33 shells! thanks again!
DeleteI have figured out why everyone keeps getting 50 shells in the 2nd row. If you chain 102, and then 2sc in the 2nd chain from the hook skip stitch and then 2sc in the next all the way across, you will end the row with 2sc in the last chain. That would give you 102sc and 50 chain spaces.
ReplyDeleteMathmatically, 102/3=34. So to get the 34 chain spaces and therefore 34 shells in the second row, you would need to do 2sc in the first chain, skip 2 chains, and then 2sc in the next chain all the way across. That would give you a total of 70sc and 34 chain spaces.
Alternatively, you could reduce your base chain to 70 and follow the pattern exactly otherwise.
The easiest way to adjust the size to fit a bigger or smaller child is to measure their chest and then do a test strip of chain and SC to see how many you need to equal that measurement. Make sure your base chain is an even number :-)
Hi Roxane, it is much easier then this, you have 102 chains, you sc in the second ch from hook, sc in the next st, ch, skip a st and 2sc.
DeleteYou do not skip 2 chains, only one.
so [2sc, ch, skip a ch] all along, ending your row with 2sc
You will have exactly 36 shells.
Happy Crochet!!!
Hi there, this dress is beautiful, I am trying to make it for my 2 year old but I am struggling with how to adapt the body, would you be able to give me some advice? I have looked at the other posts asking the same thing but they didn't really make much sense to me!! Thanks very much :)
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa, I would probably ch 84 stitches to begin with, begin arm opening at row 8 instead of 10, and begin front straps at row 10 instead of 12.
DeleteFor the back as well take off 2 rows to begin the straps and the armhole.
As for the pattern it is the same since it is done in increment of 1 stitches, you just will have less stitches to work with…does it make sense to you? let me know.

ReplyDeleteYour beautiful dress has been featured on The Firefly Hook!
Thanks again for sharing your wonderful pattern with all of us.
~Abbey
I have a quick question about the pattern. It says it's for a 6-7 child. Is that age or size?
ReplyDeleteHi Shanae...it is Size 6 to 7 ;-) Happy Crochet!!
DeleteWould you be able to adjust up to a size 8/9?
DeleteUse A bigger hook usually makes it bigger
DeleteI want to make this maybe a 9 or10 what size needle would you suggest
DeleteFor a 9/10 I would use an I needle. I am working with an H needle now I will let you know how it comes out.
Deletei love the way you shared this :x many thanks!
ReplyDeletei have problem regarding the skirt part of the dress, ma'am do have video making this?thanks
ReplyDeleteCan I assume that the original base chain is supposed to fit around the child's chest?
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI am also having problems with row 2, and I am making 3 dc in the chain space and I'm getting 51. Also, it is curling terribly. What could I be doing wrong? Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi, I just finished making this beautiful dress for my 2 year old daughter! I adapted the pattern as I used a 5mm hook and it came out wonderfully! Wish I could post a picture! The skirt wasn't as big as yours though. Why would that happen? Maybe I forgot to do something! Still looks lovely though! Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteCan Caron Simply soft be use Dont have any cotton
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, I would try first to use the same size hook 3.25 mm and see if the size still fits...and ajust to a bigger or smaller hook if needed. Happy Crochet
DeleteGreat will try it
DeleteWonderful, just what a blog it is! This blog has provided the helpful data to us continue the good work.

Hi. I have been trying to make this for my daughter yet I keep getting messed up on the 2nd row. I get 50 shells and I can't work out why for love nor money. I would be very grateful if you could help me please. Dagbird2001@hotmail.com. thank u in advance. Tracy xx
ReplyDeleteI have figured out why everyone keeps getting 50 shells in the 2nd row. If you chain 102, and then 2sc in the 2nd chain from the hook skip stitch and then 2sc in the next all the way across, you will end the row with 2sc in the last chain. That would give you 102sc and 50 chain spaces.

You mean that I have to skip two chains all the way across
DeleteVery kind of You to spend your time & provide a pic tutorial for making it easy to crochet.

DeleteHallo and thank you for sharing this wonderful pattern with us!
ReplyDeleteQuestion about row 3:
Row 3: sc, [sk next st, ch, 2sc] repeat all along, turn
Do we make the 2sc in one stitch ?
Hi Georgia, as you can see when you look at the picture it is 2sc, in 2 different stitches, ;-)
DeleteRow 6-9: [repeat row 3 and 4] twice, then 3
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean "then 3'?
I fixed it, thank you for bringing it to my attention!!...For Row10:You repeat row 3 one more time.

DeleteHi, I would love to make this for my 9 month old daughter! Any advice on how to size it down or do you have a smaller pattern? Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteHi chelsea, gently rap around the yarn you will be using for the top around your baby's chest, this is the length that your base chain should have...then proceed keeping in mind that your shoulder strap will be smaller and you will of course use less total rows. Let me know if it helps and please do not hesitate to ask more questions. Happy Crochet!!!!

ReplyDeleteHi I'm just finishing round 2 on the last 3dc,ch,sk st and I'm just wondering do I just automatically start the ch3 for round 3 and continue in a spiral or do I turn my work around?
ReplyDeleteHi Denise, I am not sure if you are talking about Round 2 of the top or the bottom of the dress, but the top is worked in Rows, and only when you begin to work on the skirt part of the dress, you will be working in rounds. I hope it helped!!!! Happy Crochet!!!
DeleteSorry ya I'm on the skirt now, thanks for the help! Love this pattern, it's so easy to understand
DeleteOne more thing :-) what's a magic ring?

I have been really impressed by going through this awesome blog. Accident Claims
ReplyDeleteThis dress is beautiful and I am definitely going to make it for my granddaughter that is turning 1 this month.
ReplyDeleteThe was I am reading your pattern...the way to downsize for her would be to measure around her chest (then make sure I come out with an even number of stitches...is that correct?
Of course I would have to then fold in half to figure out where to make the armholes - plus they would be smaller (less rows) and the straps would be shorter.
When it comes t the skirt the pattern should flow with whatever number of stitches I end up with.
Are my assumptions correct? Please let me know because I would like to get started on this.
Also, I am very adept at reading patterns..would you happen to have a PDF version of this that I could print out..I will always have your tutorial to return to if needed.
Thank you so much for the time and patience you have put into making this beautiful dress. I have never seen anyone post something so clearly....and then take the time to answer all the questions.
Your blog is amazing! thank you so much!
Yes Cheribella, you got it!!! I do not have a PDF version of this specific pattern, but you are not the first one to ask for a picture free version, so I will work on having one soon.Happy Crochet!!! and Thanks you ;-)

ReplyDeleteI think I have figured out why everyone is getting 50 shells because I did the same. It is because they are confused by row 1, not row 2. A lot of times when a pattern was a number in front of a stitch it means do it x many times in next stitch. They are reading it as [ch 1, sk next st, 2sc(in next stitch)]. They are putting 2 sc in one chain(making a stitch increase) instead of [ch 1, sk next st, sc in next two stitches].

ReplyDeleteHi not sure if I'm doing this correctly but I have taken this apart more times then I care to, this is how I'm understanding this pattern. Crochet 102 chains turn, sc in second chain from hook and then another sc in next st, chain one and SK next st, then two sc in next two chains. Then row two, chain three and 3 DC in the open chain from row one all the ways to the end and on last one it is a single DC, if this is correct... I keep coming out with 33 shells could you please email me what I'm doing wrong my head is starting to hurt :-) email is gntlkisses@AOL.com my name is Tina, try so much I'm so excited to do this dress but I'm so lost.
