Valentine Heart Granny Square Free Pattern
By AnnooCrochet Designs
I loved creating this Granny, and imagining all the fun projects I could incorporate it in...a lovely Handbag, a cozy Blanket, a trendy little pouch with a zipper...What will you choose to create with it?
You will Need:
Crochet Hook 3.25mm
I used Dungareez Cotton in various colors
Stitches Used on this Pattern:
ch: chain
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single Crochet
hdc: half double Crochet
dc: double crochet
tr: treble
dtr: double treble
dtr: double treble
With First Color Yarn, make a magic ringRound 1: ch4 (count as first tr and ch1), [tr] 15times, sl st in 3rd ch from begining of round
Round 2: ch1, in same sp [sc,hdc,dc,tr]
4tr in next st,
3tr in next st
2dc in next st
[hdc, sc] in next st, [sc, hdc] in next st, 2dc in next st
In the corner: tr in the center st
For the other side of the heart, repeat in opposite order: 2dc, hdc. sc, sc hdc, , 2dc, 3tr 4tr ( tr, dc, hdc,sc), sc
Round 3: With second Color Yarn, sc all around , you remember that to create the pointy part of your heart you had made a trebble stitch in round 2? you want to keep the pointy shape therefore instead of a sc, make a hdc when you reach the point, then continue with your sc.
Round 4: With 3rd Color yarn, and your heart facing you, sk the 4 first stitches at the left of the middle of your heart , ch4 in 5th st
in same st, [hdc, 2dc]
4dc in next st
continue dc, [hdc]5 times
dc, htr, tr
in next st 4dtr
in next st [dtr, tr], continue 4dc, in next st [ tr, dtr] in next st 4dtr;
tr; htr; dc; [hdc] 5 times, dc; in next st 4dc; in net st [3dc, hdc]; continue 9dc; join with beginning st of round 4
Round 5: hdc all around with 3 hdc in corners middle st to create the corner
Note: what you are basically trying to do is to create a square shape around your heart, right? And to do so, you have to hdc all around yes, but you will have to make 3hdc in the same st, at each of the four corners.to help creating a 90 degree angle.

What size is your finished granny square? Beautiful work!
ReplyDeleteHi Annoo, I am from South Africa and think your patterns are stunning. I have taught myself to crochet and want to use the heart square to make my daughter a blanket. However i am battling with the following, can you please help me? I have made the heart and now need to crochet around the heart. What do you mean with the following - With third Color Yarn, sc all around , hdc at the point tr from previous Round?? and also when i do the square around the heart I am battling to understand the last part - hdc all around with 3 hdc in corners middle st to create the corner?? So do you have to hdc until you get to the corner and use the stitches for the other corners. Please help, I am a beginner and this is definitely the nicest heart square i've come accross. Hope you can help me? Regards, Marelize Cherry
ReplyDeleteMarelize, Thank you so much for your questions, as it helps me to improve my patterns.
ReplyDeleteOk, let me try to help:
so with the second color yarn, (oops, am correcting it now), sc all around the heart you just created. Now, you remember that to create the pointy part of your heart you had made a trebble stitch in round 2? you want to keep the pointy shape therefore instead of a sc, make a hdc when you reach the point, then continue with your sc.
Now in row 4 and 5, what you are basically trying to do is to create a square shape around your heart, right?
And to do so, you have to hdc all around yes, but you will have to make 3hdc in the same st, at each of the four corners.to help creating a 90 degree angle.
Marelize, I hope this helped!!!! Let me know, Happy Crochet my South African artist!!!!!
Annoo, thank you so much. You explained it very well. I will let you know how it turned out! As for all the other patters I am going to try them too. Thank you and happy crochet to you! Marelize xx

ReplyDeleteHi Anno! I`m Ayelén. I`m Argentinian weaver. My english is frozzen. Im sorry for that. I try to knit this granny, because i love it the first time i saw it. I try to do it step by step... i have some questions in the 17th picture you knit dc, htr, tr. I search it in Internet but i dont found the difference between htr and hdc but i see in the picture that htr is biggest than hdc. Tell me if you don`t understand my message. Thank you so much!!
ReplyDeleteOk Ayelen, the difference is that you still wrap your yarn over twice as for a treble, but just omit the last step of your "treble" creating a half treble
DeleteFor a hdd, you wrap your yarn once and omit the last part of your dc....I hope I helped!!!
Happy Crochet!
For a hdc...not hdd....typosssss ;-)
